The Devil
Attachments, habits and reclaiming your freedom.
The Devil looms over two figures loosely chained, but look closely, lovely one: the chains are loose enough to lift off. This card isn't about evil; it's about the habits, fears and attachments that keep us feeling stuck.
Upright meaning
Upright, The Devil speaks of temptation, unhealthy patterns or feeling trapped. The first step to freedom is naming the chain. Once you see it clearly, you can begin to slip it. Be honest and compassionate with yourself; awareness is power.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, The Devil often signals release and reclaiming your power. You may be breaking free from a habit, relationship pattern or limiting belief. Celebrate each small step. If something feels too heavy to lift alone, reaching out for support is a strength.
Guidance
- Love: Notice any dynamics built on control, jealousy or old patterns. Love should feel freeing, not confining.
- Career: Ask whether ambition or fear is driving you. Make sure your work serves your life, not the other way around.
- Self: Name one habit that drains you and one gentle step to loosen its grip.
